A study on the appearance and development of the vertical crack of the reinforced concrete beam under short-term loading
Cracking is a common phenomenon in reinforced concrete beams(RC). Some current standards provide formulas for calculating the cracking moment and crack width on the vertical section with noticeable differences. In this paper, the author introduces the method for calculating the moment and vertical crack width according to Russian standard SP 63.13330.2012. This standard is the basis for editting the current standard TCVN 5574: 2012 for designing concrete and reinforced concrete elements. The method in SP 63.13330.2012 permits to design based on the the ultimate force or non-linear deformation model. In addition, the paper presents an experiment of four reinforced concrete beams subjected to short-term loading to determine the cracking moment and the vertical crack width of these beams. The obtained experimental results are used to evaluate the applicability of the theoretical calculation according to Russian standard SP 63.13330.2012 in RC design works in Vietnam.
