Abstract

Research on dam-break waves propagation and construction of floodplain map in the downstream of the reservoir are current issues because there are many reservoirs in Vietnam that are in high unsafe risk. Calculating of Dam-break wave propagation in downstream of a reservoir is complex, requiring a lot of inputs on terrain survey, roughness, structures nearby the region where the waves may be pass through. This study focuses on simulation of the propagation of dam-break waves by combining a GIS tool and HEC-RAS software. The results would like to propose an approach to simulation of dam-break waves by combining open source and noncommercial computing tools. At the same time, this study provides some recommendations on the use of empirical formulas and on downstream areas where designer must pay special attention to the calculation.
